Keeping children and data safe when buying smart toys and devices

November 27th, 2017

The 12 ways that Christmas shoppers can keep children and data safe when buying smart toys and devices (ICO)

Have you finished your Christmas shopping yet? Planning to spend a couple of hours in a Christmas Market or even on Amazon? This Christmas there will be more tech toys than ever before, and many of them will use bluetooth or wifi to link to apps and the wider internet. Some of these toys will have cameras and microphones recording the environment and the child’s play. The Information Commissioner recently published an article looking at the risks of using smart toys and it is well-worth sharing it with parents.

Safety alert: see how easy it is for almost anyone to hack your child’s connected toys (Which?)

Which? Magazine have also surveyed many connected toys and found that, without appropriate safety features, they can also pose a big risk to your child’s safety.

The Which video below shows just how easy it is for anyone to take over the voice control of a popular connected toy, and speak directly to children. Which? found that it is easy enough for almost anyone to do, not only skilled hackers.

We’re getting ready for Children in Need!

November 10th, 2017

This week, I met with the School Council to plan what they would like to do to raise money for   Children in Need on Friday 17th November. This is what they decided…                                                                                                                  Children may come to school dressed in spotty or multi coloured clothes and bring along a selection of coins for the activities that will take place from 1pm until 2pm. Children will be in their team point teams and take part in Pudsey’s money metres, Pudsey’s colour dash, Pudsey’s pennies and Pudsey’s follow the leader. I think everyone will have lots of fun!

We love it when you comment on our blogs!

November 10th, 2017

I often hear comments from parents about how much they enjoy reading the blogs on our website. I recently spoke with one of our dads who reads his child’s class blog when he is working abroad as it enables him to feel that he’s in touch with what his son is doing in school – how lovely! Please feel free to comment on our blogs, as teachers and children love to know that you have read them!

Why do I love my job?

November 10th, 2017

People often ask me why I love my job. I love it because every day is different, because it offers challenge and professional fulfilment, because I have a love of learning and am surrounded be people who share the same passion. Most of all, I love my job because of the people I am with every day. Our Roseberry family is unique – a community of adults and children who care for one another and want to succeed. The buzz in the hall during Parents’ evenings this week was a pleasure to witness. Hearing parents and teachers sharing goals and aspirations for children and planning how to work together was wonderful and the positive feedback about how families feel about our school was a pleasure to receive!

Look at this amazing news!

November 1st, 2017

On Monday, we received a letter from the Minister of State for School Standards, the Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP, congratulating us on our outstanding achievement in the 2017 Year One phonics screening check. With 100% of children reaching or exceeding the pass mark, our school is in the top 3% of all primary schools in the country!

Hip hip hooray! Congratulations, everyone!
