An emotional time for Mrs Channing at East Barnby!

September 14th, 2017

Last night, I visited our Year Six children at East Barnby. I left feeling very emotional – not upset, but overwhelmed by their kindness and compassion towards one another.

It was early evening and one of the boys was feeling a little teary. He was very tired and missing his mum. Another boy noticed this and, without being prompted, came over to tell his friend how proud he was of his achievements that day. He reassured him, stating, ‘It’s okay – everyone gets upset sometimes, especially at this time of day. You’re doing really well and you’re one of the strongest people I know.’ This was lovely to witness – but there was more to come…

Miss Burley announced that the children were to take part in the Bin Bag Fashion competition and that the children would need to organise themselves into four groups. Again, with no prompt from an adult, a girl came straight across the room to the boy who was upset, put her arm around his shoulders and said, ‘Come on, you can be in our group.’ They then ‘high fived’ one another and the teary boy started to smile.

I turned to Mr Murton, who had also witnessed this act of kindness. Both of us were genuinely moved by what we had seen and heard.

I drove home reflecting upon the genuine, instinctive, care and compassion children had shown towards one another and felt extremely proud to be a member of our amazing school family.
