Nursery provision on Roseberry’s site

October 14th, 2016

As you know, Mrs Sturdy has made the decision to close Scallywags Nursery from Christmas 2016. Whilst I understand the frustration and concern of parents faced with needing to search for alternative provision for their children at short notice, I must stress that the nursery is a private company and that the decision to close has been out of the school’s control. Mrs Sturdy rented part of Roseberry Academy’s building from which to run her company and, consequently, the school had no control over her business decisions.

Although Mrs Sturdy had spoken with me regarding her wish to sell her business on numerous occasions, the Enquire Learning Trust was only formally notified in writing of Mrs Sturdy’s intention to close Scallywags in September 2016, which left too little time for the Trust to set up alternative provision on site. Schools, whether Local Authority or Trust schools, are bound by procedures which, unfortunately, prevent them from opening their own nurseries within short time frames. It must also be noted that our current funding agreement with the Education Funding Agency does not allow us to offer nursery provision at this moment in time.

The Enquire Learning Trust is aware of the situation and I have already met with key members of the Trust, and sought legal advice, regarding future nursery provision for the children within our community. In the meantime, Little Bears nursery will move into the school building after Christmas to enable children to continue to use the excellent indoor and outdoor provision on site.

Again, I empathise with parents’ frustration and concern but must stress that I cannot change the current situation. I will, however, keep you updated as and when decisions are made in the future.
