A magical morning!

April 26th, 2016

What a treat I had today! I went into our EYFS class for a whole morning to find out what it’s like to be a child in EYFS. It was magical! The first thing that I noticed was the positive relationships within the classroom. It felt like being welcomed into a family. Children were eager to learn and listened carefully to their adults and one another. They were praised for their behaviour, ideas, comments and for solving problems.
The classroom is set out with a range of exciting activities, located in different areas. For example, a maths activity involved children sharing food between teddy bears at a teddy bears’ picnic. After sharing the food, the children had to record their findings using numbers. William had to work out what he would write when there was food left over. He found out that 14 cakes couldn’t be shared equally between four bears!
I was amazed at how calm the classroom felt. Everyone was engaged in ‘getting busy’ and knew what to do. They stuck at each activity, even when challenged, and didn’t flit from one area to another.
The adults worked with small groups on maths and literacy activities, tailored to the children’s needs. Again, children were enthused and engaged, clearly having fun whilst learning.
As children accessed different areas, adults took turns in recording children’s responses, using this information to plan their next steps in learning.
It was a delight to be welcomed into Mrs Hall and Mrs Barker’s classroom today. The only thing I left wishing for was to be four years old again!
